IF YOU’VE HEARD of Rick and Morty, the cult cartoon about a mad scientist who goes on adventures with his long-suffering grandson, you might know that fans of the show are extremely passionate about it.
In an episode from the recent third season, Rick mentions his love of Szechuan Teriyaki Dipping Sauce, a limited edition sauce McDonald’s brought out in 1998 to promote the film Mulan.
To say fans latched on to this is an understatement – they demanded that McDonald’s restock the sauce, and bid insane amounts for old bottles of it on eBay.
Eventually, McDonald’s agreed to bring it back for one day only – Saturday, October 7 – in a limited number of locations across the US.
What they did not appear to understand was how very serious Rick and Morty fans were about obtaining the sauce. They queued for hours to get it, only to find it was sold out:
They tried multiple McDonald’s to see if it was in stock:
And stood outside protesting stores that only stocked “10 or 20 packets” of the sauce:
Police were reportedly called to McDonald’s in Los Angeles, Texas and Florida after angered, sauce-less fans surrounded the buildings shouting “We want sauce”.
Those who did get the sauce are gloating; those who did not are enraged. The whole thing has become a massive joke to those outside the fandom, however:
Guess they’re just going to have to wait nine more seasons. *burps*
